Background[]

During the month of February, Red Velvet was spotted filming in a desert just outside of Palmdale, California. They were seen filming with SM Rookies member Yeri. It was believed that the title track was going to be called "Blonde Girl" because they all had blonde hair. On March 11, 2015, it was then announced by S.M. Entertainment that Yeri will be officially joining Red Velvet. They announced it through a youtube video with fellow members, along with teaser images. Later on in the day, the title of the group's first mini-album was announced.

Promotion[]

On March 17, 2015, Red Velvet held a show called Ice Cream TV, where they promoted the album and performed the songs live. It was streamed through Naver Music and SHINee's Minho was the host.

They started promotions on March 19 at M Countdown where they performed "Automatic" and "Ice Cream Cake". During the second week of promotions, the girls won their first music show trophy on March 20 at Music Bank.

Commercial performance[]

Ice Cream Cake debuted at number one on the weekly Gaon Album Chart; this gave the group their first chart-topping title. On the Gaon Singles Chart, all six songs off the album charted during the first week. Ice Cream Cake later on became the best selling album by a girl group in South Korea on the Hanteo Chart for the first half of 2015.
